Markeaton Lane is a very challenging stretch of road, with tight corners that need to be respected with careful driving.
More can be done to warn drivers in advance of these corners. Signage is obscured by overgrown foliage, and at nighttime it is not well lit.
The consequences of this are that accidents are frequent on this road. There are long lasting effects on the road, with wall being knocked down, and car remains sometimes littering the nearby hedges.
Residents have written to me with their personal stories of this stretch of road. It is vital that we improve the safety on this road so that the risks are appropriately managed. I have contacted Derby City Council’s Highways team to ask for action to improve road safety including trimming back overgrowth to improve signage visibility for drivers.
The government’s road safety strategy, the first in over a decade, invests £24 billion in our road infrastructure between 2026 and 2030. I believe that this stretch of road would be well placed for some of this funding and will be working with the council to improve our road’s safety.
