Following the confirmation of the future of the Ada Belfield care home and library, local residents wrote to me with concerns about the future of the café that operates on this site.
As it stands, the care home and the café have been sold to a private care provider, while the library will be leased back to the council at no cost. This means that the café will no longer be run by the county council. Instead, the private provider will need to run the café directly or lease it to a third party to keep it open.
The café is an incredibly important community space that cannot risk being closed. It is used by many residents, visitors, and local community groups, and its closure would be detrimental to the strong connections that have been built on the site.
I have written to Welford Healthcare, the care provider that now owns the Ada Belfield site, to raise these concerns. I want to see the café’s future secured, and I will do everything I can to help protect this vital community asset.
