I stopped by at Turnditch Primary School at the end of the school day recently, and spoke to the head teacher Roxanne Bunn, Matt Goy from the Derby Diocesan Academy Trust, and a number of parents about road safety concerns.

The school opens straight onto the main road, and I saw for myself the amount of traffic passing through, which includes lorries and tractors.

The school used to have a school crossing patrol officer, but it is difficult to find people who can do this as a job, and so far the County Council has not been willing to allow trained volunteers to do it on a rota basis.

I have written to them about this, and also to ask them for a site visit and an assessment for measures to reduce speeding and make it safer for pedestrians. The school community has already petitioned the Council for a pedestrian crossing, and I will support them to find a permanent and sustainable way of making the journey to and from school a safer one.
