For the last few months, work has been taking place at Willowcroft Recreation Ground in Spondon to upgrade its play facilities.

Derby City Council has led this development, using £90,000 made available from housing developers as part of their contribution to local facilities.

It was great to go out and see the work before the park is formally opened. It has a sleek and modern design with lots of different activities, and it’s clear that local children are already excited about getting onto the new equipment.

Play areas are really valued spaces in our communities, but they aren’t always prioritised as much as they should be. Between 2012 and 2022, at least 400 play areas in England closed, and many others have fallen into a state of disrepair. I am really pleased that many of our Labour councils are valuing these spaces, and investing in them so young people can enjoy their childhood.
