Before Christmas, I was pleased to convene a meeting for the Unesco All-Party Parliamentary Group about the UK’s Unesco sites’ contribution to our tourism industry.
The UK has over 30 Unesco sites, but only a few sites across the country get a lot of that attention. They contribute significantly to UK tourism, but to the point of being overcrowded.
We need to invest more into marketing our hidden gems for a wider audience.
We have iconic landscapes, sites of social interest and innovation, and centres of culture. Redistributing visitor demand across a range of sites would prevent overtourism and ensure that some of our hidden gems receive the regeneration they deserve.
