Since March, Pottery Primary School has introduced a new way of learning through outdoor play – which Mr Hooley, Pottery’s Headteacher, explained to me in my recent visit.

Since they introduced outdoor play and learning (OPAL), children now play more responsibly and courteously, which has improved their safety and has seen a difference in their learning behaviours in the classroom

I was pleased to learn how they have made adjustments to ensure children with special educational needs and disabilities still benefit from OPAL, with additional spaces available – including a quiet area for play and creative activities in a more relaxed environment.

It was great to learn about it, and I will speak to colleagues in government about the benefits of this kind of learning style.
